Convert GP5 and GPX files to Guitar Pro 8
Drop a .gp3, .gp4, .gp5 or .gpx file and download it again in the current .gp format that Guitar Pro 7 and 8, MuseScore and Songsterr accept. Tunings, techniques, repeats and chord diagrams come along. Free, in your browser, with no licence needed.
The converter needs JavaScript. Without it, open the file in the editor and export it from the ⋯ menu.
How it works
- Drop your .gp3, .gp4, .gp5 or .gpx file on the box above, or press Choose a file and pick it (.gp3, .gp4, .gp5, .gpx, .gp).
- The file is read in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
- The Guitar Pro file (.gp) downloads straight away. Press Download to get it again, pick another format, or open the score in the editor.
What comes through
- Every track with its tuning, capo, sound, volume and pan; drum tracks too
- Strings and frets, up to four voices, ties, tuplets and grace notes
- Hammer-ons and pull-offs, slides, bends, vibrato, natural and artificial harmonics, dead and ghost notes, palm mute, let ring, tapping, slap and pop
- Pick strokes, strums and arpeggios, tremolo picking and fingering for both hands
- Chord names with their diagrams, lyrics, text, dynamics and crescendos
- Time and key signatures, repeats with first and second endings, D.S., D.C. and coda, sections, tempo changes and triplet feel
What changes
- Whammy bar dives and volume or pan changes during the song are not read; each track keeps its starting volume and pan
- A track with two staves (a piano, for example) becomes two parts, one per staff
- The “C” common-time symbol is saved as a plain 4/4
- Note colours and layout choices (line breaks, stem directions) are left to Guitar Pro
- The file is written in the Guitar Pro 7 format; Guitar Pro 6 and older cannot open it, and Guitar Pro 8 opens it like any .gp file
The converter uses the same reader and writer as the editor. The details are on importing Guitar Pro and exporting Guitar Pro.
Why convert at all?
Guitar Pro 8 still opens .gp5 and .gpx files itself, but some other programs and services accept only the current .gp format. This page writes it from any older version, so an old tab collection becomes usable again without opening each file in Guitar Pro.
Checked by reading it back
The .gp file is written with alphaTab, the open-source library that also reads the old formats. Our tests export scores, read the files back in and compare them note by note: pitches, rhythms, strings, frets and techniques.
Something else than Guitar Pro?
From the same file you can download MusicXML for notation programs or a PDF to print.
Questions
Can Guitar Pro 8 open the converted file?
Yes. The file uses the .gp format that Guitar Pro 7 introduced and Guitar Pro 8 still uses. MuseScore and Songsterr accept it too.
Can I go the other way, from .gp to .gp5?
No. Only the current .gp format is written. Guitar Pro 5 and 6 files can be read but not produced.
Will it sound the same?
The notes, rhythms, techniques and sounds (as General MIDI programs) are the same. Guitar Pro assigns its own RSE sounds when it opens the file.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The file is read and rewritten in your browser; nothing is sent to our server unless you open the score in the editor and save it.
