Convert MusicXML to Guitar Pro
Drop a MusicXML file from MuseScore, Sibelius, Dorico, Finale or a score library and download a Guitar Pro .gp file. Guitar and bass parts that have no tab get a string and fret for every note, with playable chord shapes. Runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
The converter needs JavaScript. Without it, open the file in the editor and export it from the ⋯ menu.
How it works
- Drop your MusicXML file on the box above, or press Choose a file and pick it (.musicxml, .xml, .mxl).
- The file is read in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
- The Guitar Pro file (.gp) downloads straight away. Press Download to get it again, pick another format, or open the score in the editor.
What comes through
- Every part as a track, named as in the file, with an instrument chosen from its name or MIDI sound
- Tab when the file has it (strings, frets, tuning, capo), and tab chosen automatically for guitar, bass and other fretted parts when it does not
- Notes spelled as written, up to four voices per part, ties, tuplets, grace notes, articulations, ornaments, tremolo and arpeggios
- Hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends, slides, harmonics, palm mute and let ring where the file marks them
- Dynamics and crescendos, chord symbols and chord diagrams, lyrics, text and rehearsal marks as sections
- Title and composer, tempo, time and key signatures, repeats, endings, segno and coda; percussion parts as a drum set
What changes
- Layout is not carried: Guitar Pro places line breaks and spacing its own way
- A part on two staves, such as piano, becomes two tracks, one per staff
- More than four voices in a part, more than 32 staves or more than 2,000 measures are cut off
- Unusual key signatures (not built from the circle of fifths) are read as C major
- The file is written in the Guitar Pro 7 format; Guitar Pro 6 and older cannot open it
The converter uses the same reader and writer as the editor. The details are on importing MusicXML and exporting Guitar Pro.
How the frets are chosen
When a guitar or bass part arrives without tab, every note gets a string and fret: chords are given shapes a hand can play, single notes stay near the last hand position, and tied notes keep their string. Press Open in the editor to move any note to another string with one key, change the tuning or add a capo, then export the .gp file from there.
A piano score for guitar
A part is treated as a guitar only when the file says so, through its name or its MIDI sound. For a melody written for piano or voice, open the score in the editor, change the part’s instrument to a guitar in the instrument settings, and it gets tab.

Questions
Does it work with .mxl files?
Yes. Compressed MusicXML (.mxl) is unpacked in your browser; plain .musicxml and .xml files work as well.
My score has no tab. Will the Guitar Pro file have one?
Yes, for every part that is a guitar, bass or other fretted instrument: a string and fret are chosen for each note. Parts for piano, voice or other instruments stay as notation.
Which Guitar Pro versions open the file?
Guitar Pro 7 and 8, plus MuseScore and Songsterr. Guitar Pro 6 and older cannot open .gp files.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser; nothing is sent to our server unless you open the score in the editor and save it.
