Create Guitar Pro files online
Write tab in your browser and save it as a Guitar Pro file (.gp) that opens in Guitar Pro 7 and 8, MuseScore and Songsterr, with bends, slides, tunings and repeats intact. No Guitar Pro licence needed.
How to export Guitar Pro
- Write your score in the editor, or import a Guitar Pro, MusicXML or MIDI file.
- When it is ready, open the ⋯ menu at the top right of the editor and choose Export → Guitar Pro (.gp). You can also press Ctrl+K (⌘K on a Mac) and type “export”.
- A .gp file downloads. Open it in Guitar Pro or upload it anywhere that accepts Guitar Pro files.
What the file keeps
- Every instrument as its own track, with its tuning, capo, sound, volume and pan; drum kits included
- Up to four voices per bar, ties, rests, tuplets and grace notes
- Strings and frets, hammer-ons and pull-offs, slides, bends, vibrato, natural and artificial harmonics, dead and ghost notes, palm mute, let ring, tapping, slap and pop
- Pick strokes, strums and arpeggios, tremolo picking, fingering for both hands
- Chord names with their diagrams, lyrics and text, dynamics and crescendos
- Time and key signatures, repeats with first and second endings, D.S., D.C. and coda, sections, tempo changes and triplet feel
What it leaves out
- The file uses the current Guitar Pro format (Guitar Pro 7 and later). Guitar Pro 6 and older cannot open it
- The “C” common-time symbol is saved as a plain 4/4
- Note colours and some layout choices (line breaks, stem directions) are left to Guitar Pro
Convert MIDI or MusicXML to Guitar Pro
SimpleNotation is also a free converter. Import a MIDI or MusicXML file, and it picks a string and fret for every note, keeping chord shapes playable and staying near the last hand position. Adjust anything you like in the tab, then export the .gp file. Older Guitar Pro files (.gp3, .gp4, .gp5, .gpx) can be opened and saved again in the current format the same way.
Checked by reading it back
Every Guitar Pro file is written with alphaTab, an open-source music notation library. Our tests export scores, read the files back in, and compare them note by note: pitches, rhythms, strings, frets and techniques.
Questions
Which Guitar Pro versions can open the file?
Guitar Pro 7 and Guitar Pro 8, plus other apps that read the .gp format, such as MuseScore and Songsterr. Guitar Pro 6 and earlier cannot open .gp files.
Do I need Guitar Pro to make a Guitar Pro file?
No. You write the tab in SimpleNotation in your browser and download the .gp file for free.
Can I convert a MIDI file to Guitar Pro?
Yes. Import the MIDI file; SimpleNotation chooses strings and frets for each note. Check the tab, then export as Guitar Pro.
Can I convert old .gp5 or .gpx files to the new format?
Yes. Open the old file in SimpleNotation and export it again; it is saved in the current .gp format.
