Convert Guitar Pro to text tab
Drop a Guitar Pro file and download its guitar, bass and ukulele parts as plain-text tab: one line per string, spaced by rhythm, with chord names, sections and the usual h, p, / and b symbols. Paste it anywhere text goes.
The converter needs JavaScript. Without it, open the file in the editor and export it from the ⋯ menu.
How it works
- Drop your Guitar Pro file on the box above, or press Choose a file and pick it (.gp, .gp3, .gp4, .gp5, .gpx).
- The file is read in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
- The text tab file (.txt) downloads straight away. Press Download to get it again, pick another format, or open the score in the editor.
What comes through
- One line per string, named from the tuning (e B G D A E in standard), with the tuning and capo written above each tab
- Spacing that follows the rhythm: one dash per sixteenth note, so long notes look long
- Chord names above the beats they belong to, plus sections, repeats, first and second endings and tempo changes
- Technique symbols: h hammer-on, p pull-off, / and \ slides, b bend and r release, ~ vibrato, x dead note, (5) ghost note, <12> harmonics, PM palm mute
- Every fretted track (guitar, bass, ukulele, banjo, mandolin), each in its own tab, and a legend of the symbols used
What changes
- Whammy bar dives and volume or pan changes during the song are not read; each track keeps its starting volume and pan
- A track with two staves (a piano, for example) becomes two parts, one per staff
- Exact note lengths: text tab can only hint at rhythm with spacing
- Standard notation, dynamics, lyrics and tracks without tab, such as piano, drums or vocals, are left out
- Tied notes are not written again; the note simply rings on
The converter uses the same reader and writer as the editor. The details are on importing Guitar Pro and exporting text tab.
Pasting it so it stays lined up
Text tab only works in a font where every character is the same width. On Reddit and Discord, put the tab in a code block (three backticks before and after). In email, switch to plain text or a monospaced font. Lines wrap at 80 characters, at bar lines, so they do not break in narrow windows.
One track only
To get just the lead guitar, press Open in the editor, remove the other tracks (or hide their tab) and choose Copy as text tab from the ⋯ menu.
Questions
Which tracks are written?
Every track with a tuning: guitars, basses, ukulele, banjo, mandolin and the like. Piano, drums and vocal tracks have no tab and are left out.
What do h, p, b and ~ mean?
h is a hammer-on, p a pull-off, b a bend (7b9 means play fret 7 and bend it up to the pitch of fret 9), r a release back down, and ~ vibrato. The exported tab ends with a legend of the symbols it uses.
Why does my pasted tab look crooked?
The place you pasted it uses a proportional font. Put the tab in a code block or switch to a monospaced font and the columns line up again.
Is my file uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser; nothing is sent to our server unless you open the score in the editor and save it.
