Convert Guitar Pro to MusicXML

Drop a Guitar Pro file and download MusicXML 4.0 that opens in MuseScore, Sibelius, Dorico, Finale and Logic. The tab staff, tuning, capo and the guitar techniques come along. It runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded, and you do not need Guitar Pro.

Drop your Guitar Pro file hereor.gp, .gp3, .gp4, .gp5, .gpx · converted in your browser; nothing is uploaded

The converter needs JavaScript. Without it, open the file in the editor and export it from the ⋯ menu.

How it works

  1. Drop your Guitar Pro file on the box above, or press Choose a file and pick it (.gp, .gp3, .gp4, .gp5, .gpx).
  2. The file is read in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
  3. The MusicXML file (.musicxml) downloads straight away. Press Download to get it again, pick another format, or open the score in the editor.

What comes through

What changes

The converter uses the same reader and writer as the editor. The details are on importing Guitar Pro and exporting MusicXML.

GP5, GPX or GP: every version works

The converter reads files from Guitar Pro 3 (.gp3), 4 (.gp4), 5 (.gp5), 6 (.gpx) and 7 and 8 (.gp). Guitar Pro can export MusicXML itself, but only with a licence and only after opening each file; here, a twenty-year-old .gp3 file converts the same way as a new .gp file, with nothing installed.

Guitar Pro to MuseScore, Sibelius, Dorico or Finale

MuseScore opens Guitar Pro files directly, but Sibelius, Dorico, Finale and Logic do not: give them the MusicXML file instead. The strings, frets, tuning and capo are in the file for every note, so programs that show tab, such as MuseScore, rebuild the tab staff from them; the others import the notation and can add a tab staff with their own tools.

Why MusicXML and not MIDI?

MusicXML describes the written score: spelling, voices, tab, techniques, lyrics and chord names. MIDI describes only what is played, with no tab and no bends. Use MusicXML to keep working on the score; use MIDI to drive instruments in a DAW.

The other way round

To open a MusicXML score in Guitar Pro, use MusicXML to Guitar Pro: it chooses strings and frets for the guitar parts that have none.

Questions

Can I convert Guitar Pro to MusicXML without Guitar Pro?

Yes. Drop the .gp, .gp5, .gp4, .gp3 or .gpx file on this page; the MusicXML file is written in your browser and downloads at once. No licence, no account, no upload.

Which MusicXML version is the file?

MusicXML 4.0, uncompressed (.musicxml). MuseScore, Sibelius, Dorico, Finale, Logic and most other notation programs open it.

Does the guitar tab survive the conversion?

Yes. Strings, frets, tuning and capo are written for every note, and bends, slides, hammer-ons, harmonics and the other techniques are written as MusicXML notations. Each program draws them its own way.

Can I convert a GP5 or GPX file?

Yes. Files from Guitar Pro 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 all convert. The reader is alphaTab, an open-source library that understands every version of the format.

Can I convert many files at once?

One file at a time; each one takes about a second. For a large batch, open an editable copy of the file in the editor only when you need to check something.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The Guitar Pro file is read and the MusicXML written on your own computer. Nothing is sent to our server unless you choose Open in the editor and then Save.
