Write bass tab in your browser and hear it played back. Four and five-string bass with standard and drop D tunings, bass-clef notation above the tab, slap, pop and the other techniques, and export as PDF, Guitar Pro, text tab, MusicXML or MIDI. No download, no account to start.

Tuning and notation

TuningStrings, low to high
StandardE A D G
Drop DD A D G
5-stringB E A D G

Bass clef, written an octave above the sounding pitch, as in printed bass music. The tab has 4 lines, named from the tuning. Changing the tuning or adding a capo keeps the sounding notes and frets the tab again.

Typing bass tab

  1. Press ↑ and ↓ to choose the string, then type the fret: 0 to 9, or two digits quickly for frets 10 and above. The note appears on the staff above as you type.
  2. Set the note length with + and −, a dot with ., a triplet with /, a rest with R, a tie with L.
  3. Add techniques with one key: H hammer-on or pull-off, S slide, B bend, X dead note, I let ring, P palm mute, V vibrato, Y harmonic. Alt+↑/↓ moves a note to another string.
  4. Press Space to hear it. Slow it down, loop a passage, or turn on the metronome and count-in.

Or enter from the staff: A to G for pitches, 2 to 8 to stack intervals; a string and fret are chosen for every note. How the two staves work together, and the full list of shortcuts.

Bass in a band score

Add a bass track to a score that already has guitars, drums and keys: each instrument gets its own staff and tab, and playback mixes them with volume and pan per track. Solo the bass to practise a line, or mute it to play along with the rest.

Bass lines from other files

A Guitar Pro file brings its bass track in with the tab, tuning and techniques. A MIDI file’s bass channel gets tab with frets chosen for every note. Going out, text tab names the strings G D A E and writes the tuning above the tab, and Guitar Pro keeps everything for Guitar Pro 7 and 8.

Questions

Does it support 5-string bass?

Yes. Choose “Bass guitar (5-string)” for B E A D G, or switch a four-string bass to the 5-string tuning preset in the instrument settings.

Can I write slap and pop?

Yes. Slap and pop are beat techniques in the palette and the command search (Ctrl+K), and they are kept in Guitar Pro and MusicXML exports.

Is the notation in bass clef?

Yes. Bass parts are written in the bass clef an octave above sounding pitch, the usual convention, and the tab below shows the same notes as frets.

Can I hear it with a bass sound?

Yes. Playback uses a synthesized fingered electric bass or acoustic bass, with a metronome, count-in, loop and a slower tempo that does not change the pitch.

Is it free?

Yes. Writing, playback, import and export are free, and you can start without an account.
